History
The Paramedic Program began in 1980 on the Medical College
of Virginia campus (MCV) of VCU under the Medical Direction of Dr. Kimball Maull,
then the director of emergency medical services and trauma for MCV Hospitals.
The program initially began as an outreach program in the Department of
Surgery/Trauma Program to provide Paramedic education to the largely volunteer
EMS community in the central Virginia region. The program was the first
paramedic program in the central Virginia region and the first program in the
Commonwealth affiliated with an academic medical center and Level 1 trauma
center.

Welcome to the Old Dominion EMS Alliance’s Regional EMS Library for
healthcare Providers. This Catalog is a list of video tapes and
printed publications that make up our emergency medical services
library. The ODEMSA Regional EMS Library is available for healthcare
professionals - out-of-hospital and hospital – in Planning Districts
13, 14 15 and 19 which comprise the ODEMSA region. The printed
materials include copies of current textbooks and reference books
related to the provision of emergency medical services (EMS). Tapes
include the Virginia Department of Health’s EMSAT videos which
prehospital EMS Providers can use for continuing education credits
(CEUs) for Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support
recertification.
There is no charge for borrowing the tapes. However, the borrower will
be responsible for the cost of replacing lost and/or damaged tapes and
books. In addition, failure to return tapes on time can result in the
responsible Provider being banned from using the ODEMSA Regional EMS
Library. EMS Library materials must be reasonably available to all
Providers in the region.
Operation of the ODEMSA Regional EMS Library is under the direction of Heidi Hooker,
ODEMSA’s Executive Director. The lists will be updated
periodically. Look for the date on the last page of each section.
In order to best serve the Central Virginia EMS community, ODEMSA has
established policies that we believe will make the EMS videos and
publications available to the greatest number of hospital and
out-of-hospital Providers. Suggestions for improvements to the
policies always are welcome.
